If you're a commercial driver, passing your DOT (Department of Transportation) physical is a key step to keeping your license and staying on the road. At McAllen Family Urgent Care, we make the process fast and convenient — no appointment needed. Use these tips to prepare for your visit and ensure everything goes smoothly.
1. Bring the Right Documents
Come prepared with your driver’s license or valid ID. If you have any medical conditions, bring a list of current medications and the names of any treating doctors. For drivers with vision or hearing issues, be sure to bring corrective lenses or hearing aids.
2. Take Your Medications as Prescribed
Continue taking your regular medications, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or another chronic condition. Skipping medication before the exam can affect your results.
3. Avoid Caffeine and High-Sodium Foods Before Your Exam
Caffeine and salty foods can temporarily raise your blood pressure. Try to eat a light, healthy meal and drink plenty of water before your exam.
4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Fatigue can affect your vital signs, especially blood pressure and heart rate. Try to rest well the night before your visit.
5. Be Honest During Your Evaluation
Your provider needs accurate information to certify you safely. Disclosing conditions or concerns doesn’t automatically mean disqualification — many drivers with manageable conditions still pass with restrictions or follow-up documentation.
